Session 4A

Practices in the Ethical and Responsible Collection of Race and Ethnicity, Gender Identity, and Pronoun Data

Mitra Keykhah & Kimberly Arndts

Wednesday, September 21
3:30 – 4:30 PM (MT)

About the Session

We are delighted to announce a partnership between the Association of Donor Relations Professionals (ADRP), Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA), Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), and the Association of Advancement Services Professionals (AASP). This collaboration is developing a best practice for collecting, storing, and using data on race, ethnicity, gender identity, and pronouns in charitable fundraising. This collaboration is crucial to advancing our data into today's modern world. CASE, APRA, AFP, and AASP's partnership agreement began in February 2022, and the collaborative work to draft resource documents will occur in phases throughout 2022 and will be released in December 2022. Join us for this presentation to hear the progress and updates to date! The new guidelines will give advancement professionals guidance to ethically handle this key demographic data. Data help today's advancement teams understand and engage with diverse alumni and donors. But too often, processes and systems aren't optimized to collect this information in transparent, responsible ways. The work will also be underpinned by CASE's Global Reporting Standards, a common set of standards, guidelines, and definitions for reporting the results of educational philanthropy activities at schools, colleges, and universities across the globe. The Standards are part of AMAtlas, CASE's global resource for advancement research, metrics, and analytics.

About the Speakers

Mitra Keykhah
Senior Director, Stewardship Programs
Philadelphia Orchestra Association

Mitra recently joined The Philadelphia Orchestra as Senior Director of Stewardship Programs after nearly ten years with Princeton University as Assistant Director of Donor Relations. She received her AB from Princeton University and master’s degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of Southern California. She has also worked for WETA-FM, the classical music/NPR station in Washington, DC, and StoryCorps, the national oral history nonprofit. She has been a member of ADRP since 2012, focusing on DEI topics and issues, and has served as chair of ADRP’s DEI Committee.

Kimberly Arndts
Chief Advancement Officer - Alumni Engagement and Stewardship
Albion College

"Kim's first career was in retail management. Launching her second career and best life in donor relations, she had her first real ""ah-ha!"" moment at an ADRP conference when she heard Tom Ahern draw the parallel between customers and donors, and she realized she could do this! She views relationship-building as foundational in our industry, and recently completed her master's in philanthropy and development. She continues to be curious about how creating optimal donor experiences can move the needle.

Kim works at her alma mater, Albion College, where she serves as Chief Advancement Officer - Alumni Engagement and Stewardship, and oversees the annual fund, donor relations and stewardship, alumni engagement, and special events.

Co-chairing the research committee, she volunteers with ADRP, and in her spare time enjoys creating in the kitchen, and researching her family tree."
