About the Workshop

This workshop will be a mixture of presentation and large and small group discussions. Interactivity and active participation will be high. The content will be drawn from the presenter's 20+ years in Advancement and 15+ years in Donor Relations. A variety of topics will be covered that are intended to be of interest to early career professionals. Topics will include: choosing a job, when to leave a job, understanding leaders and leadership in order to make working with them more effective, ideas for staying relevant as a DR Professional in the long term, developing professional networks, guiding principles as a source of career satisfaction and success, and coming to terms with what success really means - and what it doesn't.

Learning Objectives

  • Consider the influences and variable that are most likely to affect the trajectory of their own careers

  • Learn at least one valuable insight that they can use when they return to the office

  • Meet at least one other attendee that they can connect with later to discuss their career status and objectives, and their thoughts on it all

About the Speaker

Mark Lanum
Senior Director of Donor Relations
Brown University

Mark Lanum is the Senior Director of Donor Relations at Brown University. He has worked in Advancement and Donor Relations for over 20 years, including 19 years at the University of Washington. As a self-professed people person by nature and computer nerd by choice, he particularly enjoys developing and enhancing stewardship systems aimed at supporting and improving donor relationships. Strong teams and healthy organizational cultures are oparticular interest for Mark as well and he always enjoys a good laugh along the way.
